A Little About Our Classroom

Welcome to 5th grade!
We look forward to a great year; we have some awesome field trips and activities planned! Our theme for this year at Rescue School is "Leaving a Legacy!" As we walk through our lives often we don't take tiime to reflect on what we are leaving behind.Although there will be some challenges along the way, by the end of the year, your students will be ready and prepared for 6th grade and their legacy will be remembered by the positive character traits they exhibit on a daily basis.

Parents are welcome in 5th grade! We can always use your help working with students, talking with students about the books they are reading, or working on the "behind the scenes" tasks in the TWC room.An email will be coming home asking for specific items that we need help with and the times and days. If you are able, we will be excited to have your help on our journey.

As many of you know, 5th grade expectations are very high, as we need to get your students ready for Middle School. Homework does not come in the form of a packet; instead, your child is expected to write his/her homework down in his/her planner each afternoon, along with gather any materials that may be needed. We spend the last 15 minutes of the day "regrouping" about the day, going over their tasks for the night, writing down homework, gathering any needed supplies, and cleaning up. Each night, Monday through Thursday, homework will be posted on this website. Therefore, even if you can't read your child's writing, you can still check what is due and help hold them accountable.
I often get asked, "How can I help my child with their homework?" This is a great question! I will be offering suggestions as we go through the year. But, to start, always ask your child to see the different pieces and parts of their homework instead of just ask them, "Did you complete all your homework?" After you see the pieces of homework, sign your child's planner, to verify that you have seen the homework completed. Next, if your child is having difficulty concentrating on homework, either set a timer in front of them and set a time limit together on the assignment they are working on. Another helpful technique that works for students who have difficulty concentrating is to have them listen to soft music with ear phones. The music helps your child be able to drown out the other distractions that are occurring and focus on his/her task at hand. Again, don't hesitate to ask if you ever have any questions! Communication between school and home is essential, and I am here to help!
