In our class this year, your students will participate in a 40-Book Reading Challenge. The purpose of this challenge is to get your students more interested in reading. This is basically reading and testing on a book a week; however, students can take a Reading Counts test on any books that a teacher reads to them or that Mrs. Allen reads to them. Also, the students will all be assigned an Open Court book to take home at the beginning of the year. These are generally shorter stories, all that are at the 4th or 5th grade reading level, and all of these stories have tests the students can take.

When can my student take a Reading Counts test? Students can take Reading Counts tests in the library, in the computer lab during our assigned time, or throughout the day in the classroom on the computers and tablets.

At the beginning of the year, and then every month remaining, each student will take a Reading Lexile test on the computer. When selecting a book, students must be within 100 points of their Lexile level (above or below).  The Benchmark Lexile Level is 750-1000. Students who have above a 1,000 Lexile level will be allowed to choose a book over a Lexile of 750.

You may ask, how can I find out the Lexile level of a book? Please visit this website: http://src.scholastic.com/bookexpert/default.asp?UID=96B9E35BEE5D49DAB9FA42936540DB59&subt=0&Test=NA
