Our Classroom

A Little About Our Classroom

We want all students to be comfortable and successful in our program.  Therefore it is important for everyone to understand routines, rules, and expectations.

We will follow a schedule for the week which is flexible according to needs of the class.  At the beginning of each day, students will have a job at the tables where they will practice skills we are learning.  After that, we will meet on the rug for our opening activities, including calendar and day count (math skills).  While we are on the rug, students will listen to and discuss stories, have group lessons (both math and language arts), and do some music and movement.  Around 12:45, we will go to tables to work on math and language arts activities.  In a few weeks, this will be the time we do stations.  I am planning to have a parent work with one of the stations. ( All volunteers must be fingerprinted and have TB clearance.)  About 1:45, we will have snack and recess (PE) time.  Then about 2:45, we will come back to class for another brief instruction time (usually science, social studies, language arts, and/or art).  Around 2:35 we will have choice time.  Later in the year, after reading groups begin, we will only have this choice time on "Fun Friday."  On Mondays, because of our computer time and library time, we will not have station or choice time.  On Fridays, we will have designated art time and journal writing time.  This is a brief overview of what our week will be like.  Of course there will be changes as necessary.

In order for our class to function properly and for all students to learn, it is important that everyone follows the rules.
There is a song we sing to remember these rules which you may hear your child singing.
         1. Follow directions
         2. Feet and hands to yourself
         3. Small voices inside, tall voices on the playground
         4. Take care of your things and keep the classroom neat and clean
         5.  Work together, get along, and respect each other
We also have three guidelines which cover almost any eventuality.  We also sing these.  They are as follows:
         1.  Be a friend
         2. Do the job
         3. Use self-control and be safe
If students make the choice not to follow the rules, there are logical consequences such as time out from the group.  Should it be necessary, we will call parents to discuss how we can work together to solve behavior issues.

We have very high academic expectations for all students.  With lots of hard work from teachers, students, and parents, all children reach or exceed the benchmarks set for the Common Core Standards and are well-prepared for the rigors of first grade.
