Parent Information

My goals include guiding students to recognize:
  • Fair is not always equal;
  • We are a team working together for everyone's success;
  • Everyone has the right to learn, to struggle, and to sometimes fail, without put downs;
  • We are each unique beings with special gifts to share;
  • We have more in common than we think.
In order to help all our students be successful, please help your child be prepared for a great day at school by providing:
  • A minimum of 8 hours uninterrupted sleep
  • A nutritious breakfast, snack, and lunch (lots of protein, limited sugars)
  • A scheduled quiet time for homework and reading
  • A dedicated place in the house for studying and storing school supplies
  • Homework support (Ask to see the work, even if you are unable to help at that time)
  • Reasonable limits on screen time (t.v., tablets, computers, video games)

Nobody wants to be "That Parent"

You've probably heard the phrase "Helicopter Parents." We all want what is best for our children but sometimes the best thing we can do is get out of their way. While our instincts may be to step in and help, children who are allowed the freedom to fall now will learn how to pick themselves up later when they are faced with the inevitable missteps and mistakes that life brings.

Instead of "helping", try asking questions like:

  • "Exactly which word(s) don't you understand?"
  • "Looks like you have a problem. How do you think you will solve it?"
  • "What do you think the answer might be? Why?"
  • "What might be the first step?"
  • "Have you seen this before?"
  • “What strategy could you use?”
  • "Tell me what your thinking on that is."

Afterward, focus more on the effort, not necessarily the result:

  • "You worked really hard on that!"
  • "What strategies did you use?"
  • "You got it! How did you do it?"
  • "What could you try next?"
  • "What might you do differently next time?"

"The greatest gifts you can give your children are the roots of responsibility and the wings of independence."

I am so fortunate and honored to be a part of your child's education. I look forward to partnering with you to make this year a success.

The best way to reach me is via email. I generally do not accept phone calls during the school day, but I frequently check email. Remind is an awesome tool, but, ironically, my Windows phone won't download the app, so I send and receive my messages online.
