Meet the teacher

A little about Ms. Harr...

I live in Pollock Pines with my 2 dogs, 2 cats, a parrot, and a snake who stays at school, except during vacations. I am always looking for families willing to take Peaches, our pretty corn snake, over any breaks.

I have been teaching for over 19 years, but teaching was not my first career. After several years working in private industry and the government - public libraries, the Legislative Counsel Bureau's law library, and the Department of Real Estate - I eventually decided to pursue my life-long passion for learning.

I received my credential at Sacramento State and have had additional training in GATE, Montessori, and GLAD. I have taught adult education, water safety instruction, YMCA scuba diving classes, and volleyball. Being a teacher has been a dream of mine since I was a little girl when I used to drag all the neighborhood kids (at least the ones who couldn't outrun me) into my make-shift classroom in our garage. Back then, what drew me to teaching was probably the thrill of being the one who got to hold the chalk and make everybody listen to me. Now I find satisfaction in guiding students to think critically, reach deeper understanding of crucial concepts, be able to reflect on their individual learning process, and gain social and interpersonal skills they can use for the rest of their lives. I also strive to make learning fun and our school a place where children want to be, not a place they "have" to be.

Before coming to Rescue, I taught 3rd and 5th grades for several years with Sacramento City Union School District. I have been at Rescue Elementary for 11 years and have taught 2nd, 3rd, 4th, and 5th grades. I enjoy camping, hiking, fly fishing, swimming, gardening, drawing, bad puns, and most of all reading (which I often do in combination with my other interests).

I strive to be accessible, receptive, and responsive. If you have any questions, concerns, suggestions, comments, or good jokes (okay, bad ones, too), please don't hesitate to contact me.
The Remind app or email work best. Phone calls will go to voice mail during the class day, but I try to respond within one day (truth be told, I don't always see the voice mail notification, so if you don't hear back from me, please follow up with an email or written note).
