We look forward to a great year; we have some awesome field trips and activities planned, not to mention an emphasis on growth mindset, "the power of yet," and self-advocacy!
As many of you know, the 5th grade expectations are very high. (For our fifth graders, we need to get your students ready for middle school.) Homework does not come in the form of a packet; instead, your child is expected to write his/her homework down in his/her planner at the beginning of their classtime, along with gather any materials that may be needed.
I often get asked, "How can I help my child with their homework?" This is a great question! I will be offering suggestions as we go through the year. But, to start, always ask your child to see the different pieces and parts of their homework instead of just ask them, "Did you complete all your homework?" After you see the pieces of homework, sign your child's planner, to verify that you have seen the homework completed. Next, if your child is having difficulty concentrating on homework, either set a timer in front of them and set a time limit together on the assignment they are working on. Another helpful technique that works for students who have difficulty concentrating is to have them listen to soft instrumental music with ear phones. The music helps your child be able to drown out the other distractions that are occurring and focus on his/her task at hand. Again, don't hesitate to ask if you ever have any questions! Communication between school and home is essential, and I am here to help!
